How Do You Deal With Carpet Stains?
Have you ever spilt something that results to carpet stains, then when you clean stains up, it disappears. But then a few days later it seems to reappear? There are two reasons why it may reappear, they are wicking and soiling. In this blog, we will look at both and reasons for them and ways of removing them.
Soiling occurs when the residue is left behind after a spot is cleaned; the cleaner has not been completely removed by blotting and rinsing. This residue is sticky and attracts dirt particles that stick to it and make the spot look like the stain has returned.
The other most common cause of a carpet stain from reappearing is a process known as wicking. Wicking occurs when something that has been spilt onto carpet has soaked through to the backing of the carpet and even into the underlay.
When you first clean the carpet stain you are only cleaning the surface of the carpet. However, the carpet may reabsorb the spill that is trapped in the backing of the carpet or the underlay. Then, making its way back up the fibre strands to the surface like traveling up the wick of a candle, hence the name wicking.
Wicking typically occurs when the carpet is wet. It can happen after you have had your carpets cleaned using the hot water extraction method [steam cleaning] and the water has not been fully sucked from your carpets leaving your carpets damp. This can be more of a risk when using DIY rental machines as they are not as powerful as a professional machine in removing the water from the carpet fibre.
How To Prevent Carpet Stains From Re-occuring?
You can prevent stains from reoccurring by ensuring that spills are treated and removed as soon as possible. That is before a spill has had a chance to soak deep into the pile and make its way to the bottom of the carpet backing or even into the underlay.
If you are treating a stain yourself, place paper towels or a white cloth towel under a weight over the treated area. This helps draw any moisture from the carpet and help the stain from reappearing.
A professional carpet cleaning company uses the proper equipment to remove most stains. It also flushes the area completely of any residue to help stop any stains from reoccurring. They extract almost all of the moisture from your carpets leaving them almost dry.
Good ventilation after cleaning is also important to help speed up the drying process. It helps dry the carpet quicker by opening all windows and letting air circulate throughout the house. Furthermore, ceiling and portable fans and air-conditioners used to circulate air also helps drying times.
Dealing With Soiling
If you think a carpets stain has reappeared because of residue left in your carpet after a spot cleaner has been used, you could pour some warm water onto the spot. This helps rinse any residue from the carpet. By also using towels in the above method, it absorbs moisture and remove any residue left from the spot cleaner. So be e sure that the area is left dry to avoid wicking.
Dealing With Wicking
If you don’t believe a carpet stain has reoccurred by residue left behind after cleaning, then the cause may be wicking. Retreat the stain as per usual procedure and be sure that you put weights over towels to absorb any moisture overnight.
If the stain reoccurs again, you may need to use the services of a professional carpet cleaner who can get to the bottom of the carpet pile to remove all of the stains and prevent wicking from reoccurring.
If possible, use a company with a powerful truck mount machine. These machines are powerful and can flush out stains and dry carpet quicker than a portable machine. However, these machines may not be suitable if you live in a high-rise unit that a truck mount machine can get access to.
Drastic Measures In Dealing With Re-occuring Carpet Stains
If the problem of a carpet stain reoccurring continues, then you may have to go to the next step in the process. The carpet may need to be pulled back, the backing pad and even subfloor should be allowed to dry. This is a job better left to a professional.
So once the area is completely dry the carpet can be reinstalled. After reinstalling the carpet, the stain can be treated as per normal procedure.
